A refined ink and wash drawing by Ruknuddin, depicting Maharaja Anup Singh of Bikaner in a formal courtly audience.
This work by the Bikaner artist Ruknuddin depicts a formal audience between Maharaja Anup Singh and a courtier. Ruknuddin was a primary painter at the Bikaner court during the late seventeenth century, and his output is known for its refined draughtsmanship and restrained use of colour. The composition follows the conventions of Mughal-influenced court portraiture, where the ruler is seated on a raised dais, receiving a visitor who stands in a posture of respect.
The drawing relies on fine, controlled ink lines to define the architectural elements of the pavilion and the folds of the figures' garments. The artist employs a light wash to suggest volume and shadow, particularly in the rendering of the clouds and the foliage behind the figures. The architectural setting, featuring a cusped arch and a balcony, provides a sense of place without distracting from the interaction between the two men. The Maharaja is depicted with the characteristic profile view common to the period, his posture relaxed yet authoritative.
This piece is a study in courtly etiquette and the visual language of power in Rajasthan. The sparse application of pigment allows the viewer to focus on the precision of the line work, which is typical of the preparatory or finished drawings produced in the Bikaner atelier. The inclusion of Persian script at the top of the page identifies the subjects, a common practice in royal commissions of the era. The work provides a clear view into the artistic practices of the Bikaner school, where the synthesis of local traditions and Mughal stylistic elements created a distinct visual identity. The paper shows signs of age, with a warm, aged tone that complements the monochromatic ink application.
