A 1938 work by Paul Klee featuring a simplified, expressive figure rendered in a palette of pinks and yellows.
Paul Klee produced this work in 1938, a period marked by his departure from Germany and the onset of his final illness. The composition displays the characteristic reduction of form and symbolic shorthand that defined his later years. Klee employs a flattened pictorial space, where the figure of Magdalena is rendered through simplified, almost childlike shapes. The palette consists of soft pinks, bright yellows, and touches of red, applied with a directness that prioritises emotional resonance over anatomical accuracy.
The figure occupies the centre of the frame, her head tilted with a singular, prominent ear and an earring. Her hair is a cascade of yellow, framing a face that appears detached from traditional portraiture conventions. The background is populated by abstract marks, including dots and circular motifs, which create a rhythmic surface texture. These elements suggest a narrative quality, yet the specific meaning remains elusive, inviting the viewer to engage with the visual language rather than a literal interpretation.
Klee often utilised titles to provide a conceptual anchor for his abstract explorations. In this instance, the reference to a conversion narrative adds a layer of spiritual or psychological weight to the otherwise playful application of paint. The work demonstrates his ability to balance spontaneity with a controlled, deliberate structure. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Klee focuses on the essential qualities of line and colour. This piece reflects his ongoing investigation into the relationship between the seen world and the internal experience of the artist. It remains a clear example of his late-period style, where the boundaries between representation and abstraction become increasingly porous.
