A detailed seventeenth-century engraving by Jean Couvay, reproducing Raphael's Madonna with the Pink with technical precision and devotional focus.
This fine etching and engraving by Jean Couvay reproduces the composition of the Madonna with the Pink, originally painted by Raphael. Couvay, a French printmaker active during the seventeenth century, demonstrates technical precision in his translation of the Italian Renaissance master's work into the monochrome medium of print. The scene depicts the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child, who reaches towards a small flower held in her hand. This motif, the pink, serves as a traditional symbol of the Passion, foreshadowing the future suffering of Christ.
The composition follows the classic pyramidal structure favoured by Raphael, creating a sense of balance and calm. Couvay uses a variety of line weights to define the folds of the Virgin's drapery and the soft contours of the child's form. The background features a window opening onto a distant, simplified architectural view, which provides a sense of depth while keeping the focus on the figures. The Latin inscription at the base, 'Dilectus meus mihi et ego illi' (My beloved is mine and I am his), draws from the Song of Songs, a text frequently associated with the Virgin in devotional literature of the period.
As a printmaker, Couvay was known for his ability to capture the tonal qualities of paintings through cross-hatching and stippling. This work reflects the seventeenth-century practice of disseminating famous Italian compositions through reproductive printmaking, allowing collectors and scholars across Europe to study the works of the High Renaissance. The print captures the quiet intimacy between mother and child, rendered with the formal restraint characteristic of the period's reproductive engraving style. The attention to detail in the textures of the fabric and the subtle shading of the skin tones demonstrates the high level of craftsmanship involved in seventeenth-century print production.
