The surrounding panels contain smaller registers of saints and apostles, arranged in a hierarchical structure common to devotional objects of this period. The use of gold leaf, applied to the background and the halos, serves to flatten the pictorial space, directing the viewer toward the spiritual nature of the subjects rather than a realistic setting. The punchwork patterns within the gold halos demonstrate the technical skill of the workshop, providing a decorative quality that contrasts with the linear precision of the painted figures.
