A classic sacra conversazione by Domenico Morone, featuring the Madonna and Child flanked by four saints in a structured, Renaissance setting.
This work by Domenico Morone, a Veronese painter active during the late fifteenth century, presents a traditional sacra conversazione. The Virgin Mary sits centrally upon a throne, holding the Christ Child, who gestures in blessing. They are flanked by four saints: Saint Catherine of Alexandria on the left, identified by her wheel, and Saint John the Baptist, who holds a staff with the inscription Ecce Agnus Dei. To the right, a bishop saint stands in ornate vestments, accompanied by another female saint. The figures are arranged across a chequered marble floor, which provides a clear sense of linear perspective.
Behind the figures, a low wall separates the foreground from a distant, rolling countryside. The sky is filled with small, distinct clouds, a characteristic feature of the period. Morone employs a balanced composition, typical of the Veronese school, where the figures occupy a stable, architectural space. The use of colour is deliberate, with the deep reds and greens of the drapery contrasting against the cooler tones of the sky and the marble floor. The painting reflects the influence of Mantegna, particularly in the treatment of the figures and the precise rendering of the architectural elements. The work demonstrates the technical approach of the period, prioritising clarity of form and a structured, harmonious arrangement of the holy figures. This piece serves as an example of the devotional art produced for private or ecclesiastical settings in Northern Italy during the Quattrocento.
