Vincenzo Foppa, a central figure of the Lombard school during the Quattrocento, produced this devotional panel during a period when Northern Italian painting began to reconcile traditional Gothic sensibilities with the emerging naturalism of the Renaissance. The composition features the Virgin Mary seated centrally, cradling the Christ Child, who rests upon her lap.
