A study of the Madonna and Child with angels, rendered in pen, ink, and wash by the Italian Mannerist painter Aurelio Luini.
This drawing by Aurelio Luini captures a traditional devotional subject through the lens of sixteenth-century Italian Mannerism. The composition features the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child, flanked by two angels. Luini, the son of the painter Bernardino Luini, worked within the Milanese tradition, though his style reflects the stylistic shifts of his era, particularly in the elongated proportions and the fluid, expressive handling of the drapery.
The work is executed in pen and brown ink with wash, a technique that allows for both precise contouring and soft modelling of form. The artist uses the wash to create depth, suggesting the volume of the figures against a loosely sketched background. The angels are rendered with a sense of movement, their forms merging into the surrounding space through light, gestural strokes. The focus remains on the central figures, where the interaction between the mother and child is depicted with a gentle, human quality typical of the period's religious art.
As a study, the drawing reveals the artist's process. The visible under-drawing in black chalk provides the structural foundation, over which the ink lines define the final contours. This layering of media offers a clear view of the creative decisions made during the composition. The paper shows signs of age, which adds to the character of the piece, grounding it in its historical context as a working document from a Renaissance studio. The overall effect is one of quiet contemplation, achieved through the economy of line and the subtle application of tone. This print reproduces the textures of the original paper and the varying densities of the ink, providing an accurate representation of the artist's hand.
