A refined Sienese tempera panel featuring the Madonna and Child surrounded by angels, with the figure of Eve positioned at the base.
This work by Paolo di Giovanni Fei, a prominent figure of the Sienese School, displays the characteristic refinement of late fourteenth-century Italian painting. The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who holds the Christ Child upon her lap. They are surrounded by a celestial host of angels, their figures arranged in a tiered, rhythmic formation that fills the upper portion of the panel. The background consists of a textile-like pattern, rendered with gold leaf, which creates a flattened, decorative space typical of the period.
At the base of the panel, the figure of Eve reclines in a distinct, lower register. She is depicted with a serpent coiled around a small tree, referencing the Fall of Man. This inclusion provides a theological counterpoint to the central image of the Virgin, who is often interpreted as the New Eve. The artist employs a delicate application of tempera, with soft transitions in the flesh tones and precise detailing in the drapery. The use of gold leaf throughout the background and the haloes adds a luminous quality to the work, reflecting the light and creating a sense of sacred space.
Paolo di Giovanni Fei was active in Siena during a period when the influence of Duccio and Simone Martini remained strong. His approach to the human form is graceful, with elongated proportions and gentle expressions. The frame itself is an integral part of the object, featuring carved motifs that echo the decorative elements within the painting. This piece offers a clear view into the devotional practices and aesthetic priorities of the Sienese workshops, where the integration of narrative symbolism and ornamental beauty was a primary objective for artists working in the tradition of the trecento.
