A refined example of International Gothic painting, this tempera and gold leaf panel depicts the Madonna and Child with characteristic grace and detail.
This work by Gherardo Starnina displays the stylistic hallmarks of the International Gothic period in Florence. The composition features the Virgin Mary seated, cradling the Christ Child, set against a traditional gold-leaf background. This technique, common in late medieval and early Renaissance devotional art, serves to remove the figures from a specific temporal setting, placing them instead within a celestial or divine space.
Starnina, who spent time in Spain, incorporated elements of the courtly style into his work. The figures exhibit elongated proportions and a sense of grace, particularly in the delicate rendering of the hands and the flowing drapery of the Virgin's mantle. The Christ Child is depicted with a degree of naturalism, reaching towards his mother, which introduces a humanising element to the formal religious subject. The presence of two angels above, holding a crown, adds a layer of hierarchical symbolism, reinforcing the status of the Virgin as the Queen of Heaven.
The use of tempera on panel allows for the precise application of colour and the preservation of the gold ground, which catches light to create a luminous effect. The base of the composition features a decorative textile pattern, a detail that reflects the artist's attention to the material culture of the period. The overall arrangement is balanced, with the figures forming a stable, pyramidal structure that draws the eye towards the central interaction between mother and child. This piece provides a clear example of the transition between the rigid traditions of the Trecento and the more fluid, decorative sensibilities that characterised the early fifteenth century in Italy.
