Bian Shoumin was a prominent member of the Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou, a group of painters known for their departure from traditional, rigid academic styles in favour of individual expression. This work demonstrates his mastery of ink wash techniques, where the artist uses varying concentrations of ink to define form and texture without the need for heavy outlines. The composition focuses on the lotus, a subject deeply embedded in Chinese cultural symbolism, representing purity and resilience as it emerges from the mud.
The brushwork is fluid and spontaneous, characteristic of the literati painting tradition. Bian Shoumin employs a minimalist approach, allowing the negative space of the paper to suggest the presence of water and air. The large, sweeping forms of the lotus leaves are balanced by the sharper, more angular strokes of the reeds, creating a sense of movement across the horizontal plane. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper left quadrant is an integral part of the composition, providing a textual layer that complements the visual imagery. The red seals, or chops, serve as both a mark of ownership and a decorative element, grounding the composition with their distinct colour.
