A fine 1778 mezzotint by James Watson, depicting Lord Chief Baron Wandesford in formal robes, based on an original portrait by Anthony van Dyck.
This mezzotint by James Watson, published in 1778, depicts Christopher Wandesford, Lord Chief Baron of the Irish Exchequer. The print is based on an earlier portrait by Anthony van Dyck, which was part of the collection at Houghton Hall. Watson was a highly skilled engraver, known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the medium of mezzotint.
The composition follows the conventions of seventeenth-century portraiture. Wandesford is seated in a high-backed chair, his body angled slightly to the side while his gaze meets the viewer. He wears the formal robes of his office, complete with a ruff and fur-trimmed garments. The use of mezzotint allows for a smooth transition between light and shadow, creating a sense of volume in the sitter's clothing and depth in the background. The dark, atmospheric setting focuses attention on the face and hands of the subject, which are rendered with precision.
At the base of the print, the inscription identifies the sitter and his position, accompanied by a heraldic crest. This work reflects the eighteenth-century interest in reproducing famous portraits from private collections for a wider audience. The technique of mezzotint was particularly suited to this task, as it could replicate the soft, painterly effects of the original canvas. Watson's work demonstrates the technical rigour required to capture the texture of fabric and the subtle modelling of the human face through a series of dots and lines on a copper plate. This print provides a clear example of the reproductive print market in Georgian Britain, where historical figures were brought into the homes of collectors through high-quality engravings.
