Beschreibung
A woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi from 1888, depicting a woman adjusting a traditional lantern in a quiet, domestic setting.
This woodblock print is part of the series 'Thirty-Two Aspects of Customs and Manners' (Fūzoku sanjūnisō), published in 1888. Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, a master of the late Edo and early Meiji periods, captures a quiet, domestic moment. The subject is a woman adjusting the wick of an andon (a traditional Japanese paper lantern). The scene is set in a dimly lit interior, where the light from the lamp illuminates the woman's profile and the texture of her striped kimono.
Yoshitoshi uses the contrast between the dark background and the warm glow of the lamp to create a sense of intimacy. The title, 'Looking Dark', refers to the woman's action of tending to the light source, a common task in the pre-electric era. The print demonstrates the artist's technical skill in colour woodblock printing, particularly in the subtle shading of the woman's face and the precise rendering of the fabric patterns. Unlike earlier Ukiyo-e works that often focused on idealised beauties, this series aims to depict specific social types and psychological states during a period of rapid modernisation in Japan.
The composition is balanced, with the vertical lines of the lantern frame echoing the posture of the woman. The inclusion of a cartouche in the upper right corner provides context, a standard feature in Yoshitoshi's later series. This work offers a glimpse into the daily life of a Meiji-era wife, stripped of artifice and presented with a focus on the quietude of her environment. The print is a representative example of Yoshitoshi's ability to blend traditional printmaking techniques with a more modern, observational approach to his subjects.
