This woodcut originates from the 1898 publication 'London Types', a collaborative project between the artist William Nicholson and the poet William Ernest Henley. Nicholson, working alongside his brother-in-law James Pryde under the pseudonym the Beggarstaff Brothers, developed a distinct visual language that prioritised bold silhouettes and a restricted colour palette. This approach drew heavily from the aesthetic of Japanese woodblock prints, which were gaining popularity in London at the time.
The composition features a central female figure rendered in heavy, dark ink, which provides a stark contrast to the muted, earthy background. Nicholson employs a limited range of colours, using small splashes of green and red to draw the eye to specific details, such as the lady's cheeks and the foliage in the distance. The figure is depicted with a sense of quiet authority, her form simplified into clean, graphic shapes that define her silhouette against the urban backdrop. In the background, a rider on horseback provides a sense of scale and context, suggesting a scene set within a public park or a busy thoroughfare of late-Victorian London.
Nicholson's technique relies on the physical properties of the woodblock, where the grain and the pressure of the press contribute to the final texture of the print.
