This woodcut print is part of the London Types series, a collection published in 1898 that documents various figures of the city at the turn of the century. William Nicholson utilised a technique involving bold, flat areas of colour and heavy black outlines to define his subjects. His approach to printmaking was influenced by the aesthetic of the poster movement, favouring economy of line and strong graphic impact over excessive detail.
The Coster, or costermonger, was a familiar sight in Victorian London, known for selling fruit and vegetables from a barrow. Nicholson captures the figure with a sense of quiet observation. The composition is stark, with the central figure positioned against a muted background that suggests the urban environment without providing unnecessary clutter. The use of a limited palette, dominated by earthy tones and a striking splash of pink for the coat, directs the viewer's attention to the form and posture of the subject.
Nicholson was a member of the Beggarstaff Brothers, a partnership that revolutionised graphic design through the use of collage and simplified silhouettes.
