A six-panel folding screen painting by Yamaguchi Sekkei, featuring tigers and leopards amidst bamboo on a gold-leaf background.
This work by Yamaguchi Sekkei, a painter active during the Edo period, displays the stylistic conventions of the Kano school, which he studied before developing his own approach. The composition is executed across a six-panel folding screen, a format designed to divide interior spaces while providing a surface for large-scale imagery. The use of gold leaf as a background creates a reflective surface, which would have illuminated the dim interiors of traditional Japanese architecture.
The subject matter features a pair of large felines, rendered with a stylised approach to anatomy that was common in Japanese art of the period, as tigers and leopards were often depicted from descriptions or imported skins rather than direct observation. The animals are positioned amidst bamboo stalks and rocky outcrops, elements that provide a sense of natural setting while maintaining a decorative quality. The brushwork is precise, particularly in the rendering of the fur and the sharp, angular leaves of the bamboo.
Yamaguchi Sekkei was known for his ability to balance the demands of decorative screen painting with a disciplined use of ink. The contrast between the dark, earthy tones of the animals and the metallic gold ground is a hallmark of the period's aesthetic. This piece reflects the cultural interest in exotic animals, which were often associated with power and strength in the iconography of the time. The screen remains a fine example of the technical skill required to maintain continuity across multiple panels, ensuring that the visual flow is not interrupted by the vertical seams. The decorative border, featuring a repeating pattern, frames the central scene, reinforcing the object's function as both a functional partition and a work of art.
