A detailed study of a lion by French artist Rosa Bonheur, capturing the animal with anatomical precision and atmospheric depth.
Rosa Bonheur, a central figure in nineteenth-century animal painting, produced this work in 1867. The composition captures a male lion standing over its kill within a grassy, open expanse. Bonheur was known for her rigorous observation of animal anatomy, often visiting slaughterhouses and menageries to study her subjects in person. Her approach to the animal form is precise, focusing on the texture of the fur, the muscular structure of the lion, and the weight of the animal as it occupies the space.
The background features a turbulent, cloud-filled sky that suggests a storm or the closing of day. This atmospheric treatment provides a dramatic contrast to the stillness of the predator. The lion is positioned slightly off-centre, its gaze directed away from the viewer, which adds a sense of naturalistic detachment. Unlike the sentimentalised animal depictions common in the Victorian era, Bonheur presents the scene with a clinical, objective eye. The palette consists of earthy ochres, deep browns, and muted greens, which ground the subjects in their environment.
Bonheur achieved significant success during her lifetime, breaking barriers for women in the arts. Her technical proficiency allowed her to render the lion with a sense of physical presence that remains compelling. This print captures the tonal shifts in the sky and the fine detail of the lion's mane, maintaining the integrity of the original oil painting. It is a representative example of the Animalier school, where the focus remains on the biological reality and character of the creature rather than humanised narrative elements. The work reflects the artist's dedication to anatomical accuracy and her ability to convey the raw nature of the animal kingdom through a disciplined, academic technique.
