Beschreibung
A detailed botanical study by Marianne North, capturing the limestone peaks of Sarawak alongside native orange flora.
Marianne North was a prolific Victorian traveller and painter who dedicated her life to documenting the flora of the world. This work depicts the rugged limestone formations of Sarawak, Borneo, juxtaposed with the bright, pendulous blooms of a local species. North travelled extensively between 1871 and 1886, often working in oil on board, a medium that allowed her to capture the specific light and colour of remote regions with speed and precision.
In this composition, the foreground is dominated by the hanging orange flowers, rendered with a focus on botanical accuracy. The branch structure provides a clear frame for the distant, mist-covered mountains. North avoided the romanticised conventions of her era, preferring a direct, observational approach. Her work was not intended for commercial sale but for scientific record and public education. She eventually donated her entire collection to the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where a purpose-built gallery was constructed to house her paintings.
The painting demonstrates North's ability to balance scientific observation with a sense of place. The contrast between the sharp, detailed petals and the soft, atmospheric rendering of the mountainside creates a sense of depth. Her technique is characterised by a steady hand and a clear, objective eye, reflecting the Victorian interest in global exploration and natural history. This print offers a view into the scientific curiosity of the nineteenth century, capturing a specific moment in the documentation of Borneo's unique environment.

Limestone Mountains of Sarawak, Borneo - Marianne North
Artist Biography
Marianne North
She was born in 1830 into a wealthy Norfolk family. Her father was an MP. She trained as a singer, but her voice failed and she turned to painting. She was devoted to her father and travelled with him until his death in 1869, which freed her to go further.
She painted plants in oils, not watercolours, and she painted them in situ within their habitats, including animals, people, and temples. In Borneo she painted a pitcher plant unknown to science, which was named Nepenthes northiana in her honour. Charles Darwin personally suggested she visit Australia. She completed 848 paintings in thirteen years, donated 832 to Kew Gardens, and paid for the gallery to house them herself. The Marianne North Gallery at Kew remains the only permanent solo exhibition in a major UK institution. She died in 1890.
