A 1930 portrait by Paul Klee, featuring a figure set against a textured, light-dappled background using a combination of watercolour and oil.
Paul Klee produced Likeness in the bower in 1930, a period during which he experimented with the application of oil paint over watercolour. This technique allowed him to manipulate textures and layers, creating a distinct surface quality that defines the work. The composition features a central figure set against a dark, dense background, which is punctuated by a flurry of light-coloured, circular marks. These marks suggest foliage or light filtering through a canopy, providing a contrast to the solid, dark form of the subject.
The figure itself is rendered with a simplified, almost primitive aesthetic. Klee uses bold, rhythmic lines to outline the facial features and the striped garment, while the eyes are depicted as glowing, yellow orbs. The colour palette relies on the interplay between the deep, near-black ground and the lighter, airy tones of the surrounding environment. This juxtaposition creates a sense of depth despite the flattened, graphic nature of the portrait. The work reflects Klee's interest in the intersection of human form and natural surroundings, a recurring theme in his output during his tenure at the Bauhaus and his subsequent years in Dessau.
Klee often approached his subjects with a focus on the internal logic of the image rather than strict representational accuracy. In this piece, the bower acts as a frame, isolating the subject and drawing the viewer into a quiet, contemplative space. The application of paint, with its visible brushwork and layered transparency, demonstrates his technical control. The work remains a clear example of his ability to balance abstract elements with recognisable human traits, resulting in a composition that feels both personal and detached. The original is currently held in a private collection, though it has appeared in various catalogues documenting Klee's prolific output from the 1930s.
