A classic Southern Song Dynasty ink painting depicting the poet Li Bai observing a waterfall, rendered with atmospheric depth and precise brushwork.
This work depicts the Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai in a moment of quiet contemplation before the immense scale of Mount Lu. Attributed to the Southern Song painter Zhong Li, the composition employs the characteristic 'one-corner' arrangement favoured during this period. The artist places the primary subject, the poet, on a small, rocky promontory in the lower right, allowing the vast, mist-filled void of the mountain and waterfall to dominate the remaining space.
The brushwork demonstrates the technical precision typical of the Southern Song Academy. The cliff face is rendered with sharp, angular strokes that suggest the rugged texture of stone, while the waterfall is captured with fluid, vertical lines that convey the weight and motion of falling water. The use of ink wash creates a sense of atmospheric depth, with the distant peaks fading into a soft, monochromatic haze. This technique draws the viewer into the scene, mirroring the poet's own focus on the natural world.
Zhong Li balances the human element with the overwhelming presence of the mountain. The poet sits alone, accompanied only by a small attendant, emphasising the solitary nature of the scholar-official. The inclusion of pine trees and rocky outcrops provides a sense of scale, grounding the ethereal quality of the mist. The muted palette, dominated by earthy ochres and deep ink tones, maintains a sense of harmony and restraint. This piece reflects the philosophical interest in nature as a source of spiritual reflection, a common theme in Chinese ink painting. The work remains a fine example of the period's ability to evoke a specific mood through the careful manipulation of space, light, and texture.
