This piece displays the cursive script of Rai San'yō, a prominent Japanese historian, poet, and calligrapher of the late Edo period. San'yō was a central figure in the Kangaku movement, which promoted the study of classical Chinese texts and Confucian philosophy. His calligraphic practice reflects the aesthetic values of the literati, or bunjin, who prioritised personal expression and scholarly refinement over rigid technical perfection.
The ink work is executed with a fluid, rhythmic motion. The characters flow across the paper in vertical columns, demonstrating the artist's command of brush pressure and speed.
