A refined example of Japanese literati calligraphy by Tanomura Chokunyū, featuring fluid ink brushwork on paper.
This work by Tanomura Chokunyū presents a fine example of Japanese literati calligraphy, or Bunjinga. Chokunyū, a student of the renowned painter Tanomura Chikuden, maintained the traditions of the scholar-painter throughout the Meiji period. The composition features fluid, expressive brushwork that prioritises the rhythm of the ink over strict legibility. The characters flow across the paper with varying pressure, creating a sense of movement and spontaneity typical of the literati tradition.
The ink application demonstrates a mastery of control, with subtle tonal shifts from deep black to lighter, washed-out grey. This variation provides a visual texture that complements the rhythmic nature of the script. The inclusion of a small, abstract ink motif within the text adds a personal, informal touch, suggesting this piece was likely a private correspondence or a casual poetic reflection rather than a formal commission. The mounting, typical of a hanging scroll, frames the central paper panel, providing a neutral backdrop that allows the ink work to remain the primary focus.
In the context of the late nineteenth century, Chokunyū remained a guardian of traditional aesthetic values while the broader Japanese art world shifted toward Western influences. His work reflects a deep engagement with classical Chinese and Japanese literary culture. The calligraphic style here is unhurried and deliberate, reflecting the meditative practice of the Bunjin artist. This print captures the nuances of the original ink, preserving the delicate balance between the negative space of the paper and the bold, dark strokes of the brush. It is a piece that rewards close observation, revealing the personality and technical skill of the artist through every individual mark.
