Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure within the Neo-Impressionist movement, produced this work in 1902. The painting depicts a group of labourers engaged in the manual task of pile driving along a riverbank. The composition is structured around the rhythmic, physical exertion of the men, whose bodies are angled in unison as they pull the ropes to raise the heavy weight.
Luce employs a pointillist technique, using small, distinct dots of colour that blend optically when viewed from a distance. This method allows for a specific luminosity, particularly in the rendering of the bright, sun-drenched sand and the hazy atmosphere of the industrial background.
