A fine 1734 engraving by Charles Dupuis after Jean-Antoine Watteau, depicting a classic fête galante scene of music and courtship in a garden setting.
This engraving, titled Leçon d'Amour, is a reproduction of an original painting by Jean-Antoine Watteau. Executed by Charles Dupuis in 1734, the work captures the essence of the fête galante, a genre defined by scenes of courtship and leisure set within idyllic, park-like environments. The composition features a group of figures gathered in a wooded area, where a musician plays a guitar for his companions. A small dog rests near the seated figures, while a statue of a nude figure sits atop a stone plinth, observing the scene from the periphery. In the distance, a soft, atmospheric view of a town and rolling hills completes the setting.
Dupuis employs precise line work to translate the painterly qualities of Watteau’s original into a monochrome medium. The texture of the foliage, the folds of the period garments, and the delicate facial expressions are rendered with technical clarity. The print includes bilingual text in French and Latin at the base, providing details about the original painting’s dimensions and its provenance from the collection of Monsieur de Jullienne. This piece reflects the eighteenth-century practice of disseminating the works of celebrated painters through high-quality printmaking, allowing collectors to acquire reproductions of significant compositions. The balance of light and shadow creates a sense of depth, drawing the viewer into the quiet, theatrical atmosphere of the scene. It remains a representative example of the collaborative relationship between painters and engravers during the French Rococo period.
