A seventeenth-century etching by Claudine Stella depicting children playing with a spinning top, accompanied by a poetic French inscription.
This etching by Claudine Stella depicts a group of children engaged in the traditional pastime of playing with a spinning top, or sabot. The composition features four figures in a rural setting, with the central action focused on the rhythmic whipping of the top to maintain its motion. The artist employs fine, controlled lines to define the musculature of the children and the texture of the surrounding foliage, demonstrating the technical precision characteristic of the Stella family of engravers.
The work includes a poetic inscription in French below the image, which reflects the moralising tone common in seventeenth-century European print culture. The verse observes the irony of the children using a whip to keep the top spinning, while the act itself is meant to lull the toy into a state of rest. This juxtaposition of activity and stillness provides a lighthearted commentary on childhood play.
Claudine Stella, a member of a prominent family of artists based in Paris, produced works that often focused on classical themes and domestic subjects. Her approach to etching is marked by a clarity of form and a balanced arrangement of figures within the frame. The background, featuring a distant structure and soft hatching to suggest the sky, provides a sense of depth without distracting from the primary subjects. This print serves as a record of historical leisure activities, captured through the refined lens of the Baroque period. The paper shows the characteristic ageing of a seventeenth-century impression, with the plate mark visible around the edges of the image. The work is an example of the narrative print tradition, where text and image function together to convey a specific observation on human behaviour.
