Charles Meryon produced this etching, Le Petit Pont, in 1850. It depicts a view of the Petit Pont in Paris, with the towers of Notre-Dame rising in the background. Meryon was a central figure in the nineteenth-century revival of etching, and this work forms part of his celebrated series, Eaux-fortes sur Paris. The composition balances the heavy, dark masonry of the bridge and the adjacent buildings against the lighter, atmospheric sky.
