Beschreibung
A poignant 1913 lithograph by Théophile Steinlen depicting a displaced family, rendered with expressive lines and muted watercolour tones.
Théophile Steinlen, a Swiss-born artist who settled in the Montmartre district of Paris, produced this work in 1913. The image depicts a family in a state of displacement, a subject that occupied much of his output during this period. Steinlen often turned his attention to the marginalised members of society, including the working class, the impoverished, and the homeless. His approach avoids sentimentality, opting instead for a direct observation of the human condition.
The composition features a central male figure holding a small child, surrounded by other family members and a cat. The figures are rendered with a combination of firm, expressive line work and muted washes of colour. The artist employs a palette of earthy tones, which reinforces the sombre nature of the scene. The cobblestone ground and the weary expressions of the subjects suggest a life lived on the fringes of urban society. Steinlen was a frequent contributor to satirical and political journals, and his graphic work often carried a critique of social inequality.
This print demonstrates his technical proficiency in lithography, a medium he used to reach a wider audience. The lines are precise, capturing the texture of clothing and the weight of the figures. The inclusion of the cat is a recurring motif in Steinlen's work, as he was well known for his affection for the animal. The work remains a clear example of his ability to document the realities of Parisian life at the turn of the twentieth century. It provides a window into the social concerns of the era, presented with a focus on individual dignity rather than abstract political messaging.
