A classic urban scene by Maurice Utrillo, depicting the iconic Montmartre cabaret with his signature textured style and muted, atmospheric palette.
Maurice Utrillo is synonymous with the streets of Montmartre. This depiction of the famous cabaret, Le Lapin Agile, captures the artist's characteristic approach to urban architecture. During his white period, Utrillo developed a distinct method of applying paint, often mixing plaster with pigment to create a textured, chalky surface that mimics the weathered walls of Parisian buildings.
The composition focuses on the modest, low-slung structure of the cabaret. Utrillo employs a muted palette, dominated by ochre, cream, and deep blue shutters, which provides a sense of quietude. The bare, skeletal trees in the foreground suggest a winter season, adding to the melancholic atmosphere that permeates much of his work. The fence, rendered with simple, rhythmic strokes, creates a barrier between the viewer and the building, reinforcing the sense of isolation often found in his depictions of the city.
Utrillo painted this subject multiple times throughout his career, as he was deeply attached to the bohemian history of the area. Unlike his contemporaries who sought to capture the movement of modern life, Utrillo remained fixed on the stillness of the architecture. His work avoids the decorative flourishes of the era, favouring a direct, almost naive observation of the physical environment. The perspective is slightly flattened, which draws attention to the materiality of the paint and the structural geometry of the house itself. This print offers a view into the early twentieth-century Parisian experience, stripped of artifice and presented with a raw, honest sensibility.
