A striking mezzotint by Jacob Gole depicting a man in distress, reflecting on the social pressures of the early eighteenth century.
This mezzotint by Jacob Gole, titled 'Le Desesperé', captures a moment of stark emotional intensity. Gole, a Dutch engraver and publisher active in Amsterdam, was known for his technical proficiency in the mezzotint process. This medium allows for a wide range of tonal values, moving from deep, velvety blacks to soft, luminous highlights, which Gole employs here to model the figure's strained facial features and the texture of the fabric.
The composition is circular, focusing on a man in a state of apparent distress. He holds a monk's habit, suggesting a narrative of forced piety or a desperate retreat into religious life to escape poverty. The accompanying French verse below the image reinforces this theme, reflecting on the necessity of taking the frock to avoid misery. The man's expression is one of agitation, with wide eyes and an open mouth, conveying a sense of urgency that is characteristic of the satirical and moralising prints popular in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries.
Gole's work often drew inspiration from contemporary social commentary and caricature. By using the mezzotint technique, he achieves a painterly quality that elevates the print beyond simple illustration. The play of light across the subject's torso and the folds of the garment demonstrates his command over the medium. This piece offers a glimpse into the period's interest in human emotion and the social pressures of the era, presented through a lens of dark irony. The print remains a fine example of the Dutch tradition of printmaking, where technical skill met a keen eye for the complexities of the human condition.
