A detailed 19th-century engraving by Albrecht Christoph Reindel, depicting the classical scene of shepherds discovering a tomb in Arcadia.
This fine art print is an engraving by Albrecht Christoph Reindel, based on the celebrated composition 'Et in Arcadia ego' by Nicolas Poussin. The scene depicts three shepherds and a female figure gathered around a stone tomb in a pastoral setting. One shepherd kneels to decipher the inscription carved into the stone, while the others observe with contemplative expressions. The composition reflects the Neoclassical interest in antiquity, focusing on themes of mortality and the passage of time within an idealised natural environment.
Reindel, a skilled German engraver, demonstrates technical precision in his handling of light and shadow. The tonal variations across the stone surfaces and the soft modelling of the figures illustrate the capabilities of the intaglio process. The background features a balanced arrangement of trees and distant mountains, typical of the Poussinian style, which prioritises order and clarity. The figures are rendered with anatomical accuracy, their drapery falling in classical folds that suggest a debt to ancient sculpture.
This work serves as a record of the European tradition of reproducing master paintings through printmaking. By translating Poussin's oil painting into a monochrome medium, Reindel allows the viewer to focus on the structural integrity of the composition and the narrative weight of the subject matter. The print captures the quiet, philosophical atmosphere of the original, inviting reflection on the brevity of life. It is a representative example of nineteenth-century reproductive engraving, where the artist sought to maintain the spirit of the original work while adapting it to the specific requirements of the copper plate. The print remains a clear example of the dialogue between the Baroque painter and the later printmaker, preserving a specific interpretation of the Arcadian myth for a wider audience.
