A detailed etching by Aegidius Sadeler (II) after Roelant Savery, depicting hunters in a wooded setting with a distant town.
This etching, titled Landschap met twee jagers, demonstrates the technical precision of Aegidius Sadeler (II), a prominent member of the Sadeler family of engravers. The work is based on a design by Roelant Savery, whose influence is visible in the treatment of the dense, gnarled trees and the atmospheric depth of the background. The composition is divided into two distinct zones: a shaded, wooded foreground where two hunters and their dogs are positioned, and a bright, expansive vista that opens up towards a distant town and waterway.
Sadeler employs a variety of hatching techniques to define the textures of the bark, the foliage, and the water. The heavy, dark lines in the foreground create a sense of enclosure, which contrasts with the lighter, more delicate lines used to render the distant architecture and the sky. This use of chiaroscuro, achieved through the density of the etched lines, provides a sense of volume and space. The hunters, though small in scale, serve as a narrative element that draws the viewer into the scene, guiding the eye from the immediate forest floor toward the bridge and the settlement beyond.
As an engraver working for the imperial court in Prague, Sadeler produced works that were highly sought after for their quality and detail. This print reflects the period's interest in the natural world, combining observation with the stylistic conventions of the time. The inclusion of the Latin inscription at the bottom, noting the roles of both the inventor and the engraver, provides context regarding the collaborative nature of print production during the early seventeenth century. The work remains a fine example of the technical capabilities of the period, offering a glimpse into the aesthetic priorities of Northern European printmakers.
