A serene ink and light colour painting on silk by Ming Dynasty artist Sheng Maoye, depicting a quiet river scene inspired by Tang-dynasty poetry.
Sheng Maoye, an active painter during the late Ming Dynasty, produced this work as part of a series interpreting themes from Tang-dynasty poetry. The composition follows the traditional literati approach, where the natural world serves as a vehicle for poetic expression rather than a direct topographical record. The scene depicts a quiet riverbank with a cluster of bare trees, their branches rendered with precise, rhythmic brushwork. A small boat carrying three figures drifts on the water, providing a sense of human scale against the distant, softly washed mountain ranges.
The artist employs a restrained palette, relying on varying densities of ink to create depth and atmosphere. The silk support has aged to a warm, golden tone, which harmonises with the subtle application of light colour. In the upper left corner, the calligraphy integrates seamlessly with the visual elements, a hallmark of the scholar-painter tradition where text and image share equal weight. The seals placed in the corners indicate the work's provenance and the appreciation of later collectors.
Sheng Maoye was known for his ability to capture the quietude of nature. This piece avoids dramatic flourishes, preferring a balanced arrangement that draws the viewer into a contemplative state. The treatment of the water, with its minimal ripples, suggests a calm, still day. The figures in the boat are depicted with simple, elegant lines, their presence adding a narrative layer to the scene without dominating the composition. This work reflects the late Ming interest in revisiting classical themes through a personal, stylistic lens, maintaining a dialogue with the past while asserting the individual hand of the artist.
