A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Anthonie Waterloo depicting the biblical scene of Elijah in a dense, atmospheric forest.
Anthonie Waterloo was a prominent Dutch etcher and painter, known for his focus on wooded scenes and natural environments. This etching depicts the biblical narrative of the prophet Elijah, who is shown seated near a stream, receiving sustenance from ravens. The composition prioritises the dense, textured foliage of the trees, which dominate the upper portion of the frame. Waterloo employs a variety of hatching techniques to differentiate between the rough bark of the foreground trees, the soft leaves of the canopy, and the rocky terrain surrounding the water.
The narrative element remains secondary to the atmospheric study of the forest. Elijah is a small figure, positioned in the lower left, which allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of light and shadow across the woodland. The ravens are captured in flight, providing a sense of movement against the stillness of the trees. Waterloo avoids the dramatic, high-contrast lighting often associated with his contemporaries, opting instead for a balanced, tonal approach that emphasises the physical reality of the forest floor and the density of the undergrowth.
Waterloo produced a significant body of work during the seventeenth century, often focusing on the areas around Utrecht and the Veluwe. His prints were widely circulated and collected, influencing later generations of artists who sought to capture the character of the Dutch countryside. This particular work demonstrates his technical proficiency with the etching needle, particularly in his ability to create depth through layered lines and varied pressure. The print provides a clear example of the Dutch tradition of treating religious subjects within a naturalistic, observational framework, where the environment itself carries as much weight as the figures inhabiting it.
