Sesson Shukei, a Zen monk and painter, produced this six-panel folding screen during the Muromachi period. The work displays the characteristic ink wash techniques of the era, where varying densities of black ink create depth and atmosphere. To the left, the scene opens into a calm, expansive body of water with small boats, suggesting a sense of distance and quietude. As the eye moves toward the right, the terrain becomes more rugged. Jagged mountain peaks emerge from swirling mists, rendered with sharp, angular brushwork. A waterfall cascades down the centre, providing a vertical anchor for the composition.
