A traditional Chinese ink painting on silk by Zhai Dakun, featuring a mountainous landscape rendered in the style of the master Ching Hao.
This work by Zhai Dakun (d. 1804) represents the tradition of literati painting during the Qing Dynasty. The composition pays homage to the Five Dynasties period master Ching Hao, known for his monumental mountain forms and atmospheric depth. Zhai employs a restrained palette of ink washes on silk, creating a sense of distance through the subtle gradation of tone.
The scene depicts a mountainous terrain with a cluster of dwellings nestled at the base of a steep incline. Bare, gnarled trees occupy the foreground, their skeletal branches rendered with precise, calligraphic brushwork. The mountains rise in the background, their surfaces textured with light washes that suggest rocky formations and sparse vegetation. A calm body of water stretches across the left side of the frame, balancing the vertical mass of the peaks on the right.
In the upper left corner, an inscription provides context for the work, linking the artist to the stylistic lineage of his predecessors. The use of silk as a medium allows for a soft, muted appearance, characteristic of the period's preference for understated elegance. The brushwork is deliberate, focusing on the structural integrity of the forms rather than decorative detail. This piece reflects the scholarly practice of studying and reinterpreting historical masters to maintain a connection with the artistic past. The composition follows the classic shan shui format, where the interaction between solid rock and empty space creates a meditative environment. The absence of human figures emphasises the scale of the natural world, a common theme in Chinese ink painting. This print captures the tonal nuances of the original silk, preserving the balance between the dark ink of the trees and the lighter, atmospheric washes of the distant hills.
