Zhai Dakun employs a muted palette, relying on ink washes to define the forms of the mountains and the foliage. The silk support has aged to a warm, golden tone, which provides a neutral background for the darker ink applications.
The composition follows a traditional arrangement, with a large, looming rock formation in the upper right corner that balances the dense cluster of trees and the small dwelling in the lower section.
