A refined fan painting in ink on gold-flecked paper, reflecting the literati tradition and the stylistic influence of the master Dong Yuan.
This fan painting by Lu Kezheng demonstrates the stylistic conventions of the Southern School of Chinese painting. Executed in ink on a gold-flecked ground, the work pays homage to the 10th-century master Dong Yuan, whose influence remained a touchstone for later literati artists. The composition follows the traditional fan format, utilising the curved space to create a sense of expansive distance.
The scene features rolling hills and gentle slopes, rendered with soft, layered brushwork that suggests the humid, atmospheric conditions often associated with the Jiangnan region. The artist employs a restrained palette, allowing the ink tones to interact with the metallic sheen of the paper. Small clusters of trees and a modest structure near the water provide a sense of human scale within the vast natural setting. The brushwork is deliberate and rhythmic, reflecting the scholar-painter tradition where technical skill serves as a vehicle for personal expression and historical dialogue.
Lu Kezheng captures the essence of the 'hemp-fibre' texture strokes, a technique famously attributed to Dong Yuan, to define the contours of the terrain. The inclusion of calligraphy and a red seal in the upper section balances the visual weight of the mountains on the right. This piece functions as both a functional object and a refined exercise in artistic lineage, showing how painters of the period engaged with the past to inform their own creative output. The work remains a quiet example of the aesthetic values held by the literati class, prioritising subtlety and technical mastery over overt display.
