Beschreibung
A 1913 Cubist composition by Juan Gris, featuring the architectural and natural forms of Céret rendered in geometric planes and a muted palette.
Painted in 1913, this work represents the analytical approach Juan Gris applied to the natural world during his time in Céret. Unlike the fragmented, multi-perspective works of his contemporaries, Gris here organises the scene into a series of overlapping, geometric planes. The composition relies on a restricted palette of greens, blacks, and muted greys, which allows the viewer to focus on the structural arrangement of the forms rather than atmospheric effects.
The image depicts architectural elements and foliage reduced to their essential shapes. Rounded, scalloped edges suggest the presence of trees or bushes, while sharper, angular lines define the structures of the houses. Gris was known for his mathematical precision, and this piece demonstrates his method of constructing a picture from the bottom up. He does not attempt to replicate the visual reality of the French town, but instead creates a new, autonomous reality on the canvas surface.
By flattening the space, Gris forces the eye to move across the surface, tracing the relationship between the dark, solid masses and the lighter, negative spaces. The repetition of the scalloped motifs provides a rhythmic quality to the work, balancing the rigid geometry of the buildings. This period of his career is noted for its clarity and the systematic way he explored the possibilities of the Cubist idiom. The work remains a clear example of his transition from the initial, more chaotic experiments of early Cubism toward a more ordered, synthetic style that would define his later output. It is a study in balance, where the weight of the dark forms is countered by the lighter, more open areas of the composition.
