Beschreibung
A serene and devotional depiction of the Lamentation by the Early Renaissance master Fra Angelico, featuring a balanced composition and luminous colour palette.
This work by Fra Angelico depicts the mourning figures gathered around the body of Christ following the deposition from the cross. The composition is arranged in a horizontal frieze, a common device in early Renaissance narrative painting, which allows for the clear identification of each individual participant. The central figure of Christ lies across the laps of the Virgin Mary and other mourners, creating a sequence of gestures that guide the viewer across the panel.
Fra Angelico employs a clear, luminous palette, characteristic of his work for the Dominican convent of San Marco in Florence. The figures are rendered with a focus on devotional clarity rather than anatomical realism. Their expressions are restrained, conveying grief through posture and the careful positioning of hands. The background features a stark, fortified wall and a simplified landscape, which serves to isolate the figures and focus attention on the central event. The use of gold leaf for the haloes provides a traditional decorative element that contrasts with the more naturalistic treatment of the drapery and the figures themselves.
As a monk, Fra Angelico approached his subjects with a specific theological intent. The painting is designed to encourage contemplation, inviting the viewer to participate in the sorrow of the scene. The clarity of the light and the balanced distribution of the figures reflect the artist's ability to synthesise the Gothic tradition with the emerging humanism of the fifteenth century. This print captures the precise colour relationships and the delicate brushwork of the original tempera panel, offering a clear view of the artist's technique and his approach to narrative composition.
