This work is a fragment from the Maestà, the large altarpiece commissioned for the Siena Cathedral. Duccio di Buoninsegna, a central figure in the development of Sienese painting, utilised tempera and gold leaf to construct this scene. The composition focuses on the grief of the figures surrounding the body of Christ. The Virgin Mary leans over her son, her face pressed against his in a gesture of mourning. Other figures, including John the Apostle and Joseph of Arimathea, complete the group. Their expressions are marked by a restrained sorrow, a departure from the more rigid Byzantine conventions of the period.

The use of colour is deliberate, with the deep blue of the Virgin's mantle contrasting against the red garments of the surrounding figures. The gold background, typical of the period, flattens the space, yet the arrangement of the figures creates a sense of physical proximity and shared emotional weight. The anatomical treatment of Christ's body shows an attempt to render human form with greater sensitivity, reflecting the shift toward naturalism that characterised the early fourteenth century in Italy.

As a fragment, the work offers a focused view of Duccio's technical skill. The fine brushwork is visible in the rendering of the hair, the folds of the drapery, and the subtle modelling of the faces. The panel demonstrates the artist's ability to balance decorative elements with narrative clarity.
