A striking charcoal and pastel study by Dutch artist Han Bayens, depicting the mythological figure Lachesis with a symbolic rooster.
Lachesis by Han Bayens presents a mythological subject through a modern, expressive lens. In Greek mythology, Lachesis is one of the three Moirai, or Fates, responsible for measuring the thread of life. Bayens depicts the figure in a crouched, contemplative posture, clutching a long, flowing strand that suggests the thread of destiny. The composition is dominated by dark, gestural charcoal strokes that define the anatomy of the figure and the surrounding space.
The inclusion of a rooster perched upon the figure introduces a symbolic element, often associated with the dawn or the passage of time. The artist employs a muted, earthy palette, allowing the sharp, saturated red of the rooster's comb to act as a visual anchor. The application of pastel provides texture and depth, contrasting with the raw, sketch-like quality of the charcoal lines. Bayens avoids rigid realism, opting instead for a fluid, emotive style that prioritises the psychological weight of the subject over anatomical precision.
The work reflects the artist's interest in classical themes interpreted through a mid-twentieth-century aesthetic. The paper support remains visible, contributing to the work's tactile quality and sense of immediacy. The figure's expression is one of quiet focus, aligning with the solemn nature of the mythological role. This piece demonstrates Bayens' ability to balance narrative complexity with a direct, unadorned approach to drawing. The interplay between the human form and the avian companion creates a sense of tension, suggesting a narrative that exists outside of a specific temporal setting. By focusing on the act of measuring or holding the thread, the artist invites the viewer to consider the weight of the mythological task depicted.
