Beschreibung
A delicate maritime study of the port of La Rochelle, captured in 1925 through minimal charcoal lines and light watercolour washes.
This work by Paul Signac captures the harbour of La Rochelle through a minimalist lens. Executed in 1925, the piece demonstrates the artist's late-career approach to maritime subjects, where he prioritised economy of line and light washes of colour over the rigid pointillist technique of his earlier years. The composition features the iconic towers of the port, rendered with loose charcoal strokes that define the architectural mass without relying on heavy detail.
Signac, a central figure in the development of Neo-Impressionism, spent much of his life travelling along the French coastline. His fascination with the sea and the mechanics of sailing vessels remained a constant theme throughout his career. In this study, the watercolour application is deliberately sparse, allowing the tone of the paper to function as a structural element of the scene. The blue and green pigments suggest the presence of water and sky, while the red accents provide a subtle contrast to the neutral palette.
Unlike his more formal oil paintings, this work offers a glimpse into the artist's preparatory process and his ability to distill complex nautical environments into essential forms. The visible charcoal lines retain a sense of immediacy, reflecting the artist's direct observation of the port. By focusing on the interplay between the verticality of the masts and the solid geometry of the stone towers, Signac creates a balanced arrangement that captures the atmosphere of the Atlantic coast. This print preserves the delicate nature of the original medium, ensuring the subtle transitions between the charcoal outlines and the watercolour washes are maintained for the viewer.

La Rochelle - Paul Signac
Artist Biography
Paul Signac
Signac embraced Pointillism after encountering Seurat's *A Sunday on La Grande Jatte* in 1884. Captivated by the scientific approach to colour and light, he became a devoted follower and, later, a leading advocate of the style. Following Seurat's untimely death in 1891, Signac stepped into the role of the movement's champion, ensuring its continued influence on the avant-garde. His own works, such as *The Red Buoy* and *Antibes, Evening*, showcase his mastery of the technique, using vibrant dots of pure colour to create luminous and harmonious compositions.
Beyond his artistic output, Signac was also a dedicated writer and theorist. His book, *From Eugène Delacroix to Neo-Impressionism*, remains a seminal text on the subject, providing invaluable insights into the principles and philosophy behind Pointillism. Signac's passion for sailing also profoundly influenced his art, with many of his paintings depicting coastal scenes and harbours across France. He died in 1935, leaving behind a legacy as both a talented artist and a key intellectual force within the Neo-Impressionist movement.
