A charming 1824 lithograph by Louis Léopold Boilly depicting a scene of childhood mischief and discipline, rendered with fine detail and subtle hand-colouring.
Louis Léopold Boilly was a keen observer of Parisian life, and this lithograph, titled La Punition, captures a moment of childhood drama with characteristic precision. Produced in 1824, the work belongs to a series of prints that explore the everyday experiences of children, often focusing on their emotional reactions to discipline or social interaction.
The composition centres on three boys. The central figure, wearing a paper hat fashioned to resemble donkey ears, wipes tears from his eyes, clearly distressed by his situation. Behind him, a companion looks on with a mischievous grin, while a third boy in the foreground points towards the crying child, his expression one of mockery. Boilly uses a delicate hand-coloured lithographic technique to define the textures of their clothing and the subtle variations in their facial expressions.
Boilly moved away from the grand historical subjects popular in the late eighteenth century to focus on the domestic sphere and the nuances of human behaviour. His ability to render the specificities of a child's grimace or the tilt of a head provides a clear window into the social attitudes of the period. The print was published by Delpech, a firm known for its high-quality lithographic output in Paris during the 1820s. By isolating the figures against a plain background, Boilly ensures the viewer focuses entirely on the narrative interaction between the three subjects. This piece remains a fine example of the artist's technical skill and his interest in the psychological realism of his contemporaries, capturing a fleeting moment of schoolroom or domestic conflict with clarity and humour.
