A detailed eighteenth-century etching depicting a traditional water jousting competition in a French harbour, capturing the energy of the spectacle.
This etching, titled La Joûte, depicts a traditional water jousting competition, a popular spectacle in French maritime towns during the early eighteenth century. Gaspard Duchange, a skilled engraver, captures the kinetic energy of the event, where participants stand on the prows of small boats, attempting to knock their opponents into the water with long poles. The composition is balanced, placing the action in the centre while framing the scene with spectators on the riverbank and a bustling harbour in the background.
The print demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of French engraving from this period. Duchange uses varied line weights to define the textures of the water, the rigging of the ships, and the architectural details of the distant town. The inclusion of poetic text beneath the image provides context, describing the bravery of the sailors who perform these feats without fear of the elements. The figures in the foreground are rendered with attention to period costume, reflecting the social atmosphere of a public festival.
As a historical document, the work offers insight into the leisure activities and maritime culture of the era. The etching technique allows for a high degree of detail, from the ripples on the water surface to the expressions of the onlookers. This piece is an example of the illustrative print tradition that circulated throughout Europe, documenting both local customs and the technical capabilities of the engraver. The work is marked J. Rigaud fecit, indicating that the original design was by the artist Jean Rigaud, with Duchange executing the engraving. This collaboration was common in the production of high-quality prints during the eighteenth century, where the division of labour between the draughtsman and the engraver ensured a refined final product.
