La composizione TA, painted by Carlo Carrà in 1916, represents a shift in the artist's career from the kinetic energy of Futurism toward the stillness of Metaphysical Art. During this period, Carrà began to explore the enigmatic potential of everyday objects, placing them in non-naturalistic, stage-like settings that defy conventional perspective.
The composition features a collection of disparate elements, including architectural fragments, a bowl, and the letters TA, which appear to float within a shallow, compressed space. The palette is composed of muted earth tones, deep blacks, and patches of blue, which contribute to the sense of quietude and mystery. By stripping these objects of their usual context, Carrà invites the viewer to consider their formal qualities and their relationship to one another in a vacuum of time.
This work reflects the influence of Giorgio de Chirico, with whom Carrà collaborated in Ferrara. The painting avoids the chaotic dynamism of his earlier works, opting instead for a static, almost architectural arrangement. The inclusion of letters and numbers serves as a graphic device, grounding the abstract forms while simultaneously adding a layer of cryptic meaning.
