Beschreibung
A 1911 Cubist composition by Albert Gleizes, depicting a hunting scene through fragmented geometric planes and a muted, earthy colour palette.
Albert Gleizes, a central figure in the development of early twentieth-century French modernism, produced La Chasse in 1911. This work captures the traditional subject of a hunt through the analytical lens of Cubism. Rather than attempting to replicate the visual reality of the scene, Gleizes breaks the figures of the riders, horses, and hounds into a series of intersecting geometric planes. The composition relies on the fragmentation of form, where the boundaries between the hunters and their surroundings become porous and indistinct.
The colour palette is restrained, favouring earthy tones, ochres, and muted greens that align with the analytical phase of the movement. By deconstructing the subject into multiple viewpoints, Gleizes invites the viewer to reconstruct the scene mentally. The rhythmic repetition of angular shapes suggests movement and the chaotic energy inherent in a hunt. The horses and riders are not depicted as static objects but as components within a larger, shifting structure of light and shadow.
Gleizes was instrumental in the theoretical articulation of Cubism, co-authoring Du 'Cubisme' with Jean Metzinger in 1912. His approach in this painting demonstrates his interest in the relationship between the object and the space it occupies. The flattened perspective forces the viewer to engage with the surface of the canvas as a constructed reality rather than a window into a three-dimensional world. This piece offers a clear example of how the artist applied rigorous intellectual principles to traditional subject matter, resulting in a work that prioritises structural integrity over representational accuracy. It remains a representative example of the Parisian avant-garde during a period of rapid stylistic experimentation.
