A Post-Impressionist view of the Normandy harbour at Fécamp, rendered with Gustave Loiseau’s signature cross-hatched brushwork and atmospheric colour palette.
Gustave Loiseau, a French painter associated with the Post-Impressionist movement, frequently turned his attention to the coastal towns of Normandy. In this depiction of Fécamp, he captures the harbour area with a characteristic focus on light and atmospheric conditions. The composition is structured around the interplay between the built environment of the town and the water of the port.
Loiseau employs a technique often described as 'en treillis' (trellis-like), where short, cross-hatched brushstrokes build up the surface of the canvas. This method creates a textured, rhythmic quality across the scene, particularly visible in the treatment of the sky and the water. The palette consists of soft blues, greens, and warm earth tones, reflecting the specific light of the northern French coast. The buildings, with their varied rooflines, are rendered with a sense of solidity that contrasts with the fluid movement of the harbour waters.
Unlike his contemporaries who sought to capture fleeting moments of modern life, Loiseau often returned to the same locations repeatedly to observe how changing seasons and times of day altered the appearance of a site. This work provides a view of the port that balances architectural detail with the painterly concerns of the era. The presence of the boats and the pier adds a sense of scale and activity to the scene, grounding the composition in the reality of a working maritime town. The artist’s signature is visible in the lower left corner, a common feature in his works from this period. This print offers a clear view of Loiseau’s approach to colour and form, demonstrating his ability to translate the physical reality of the Normandy coast into a structured, painterly arrangement.
