A traditional Kalighat watercolour painting depicting the divine figures of Krishna and Radha, rendered in the bold, linear style of nineteenth-century Bengal.
This work is a characteristic example of Kalighat painting, a style that emerged in the nineteenth century near the Kalighat Kali Temple in Kolkata. These works were produced by itinerant artists for pilgrims and tourists, often featuring bold outlines and flat areas of colour. The medium is typically watercolour on paper, which allowed for rapid production to meet the demands of the market.
The composition depicts the Hindu deity Krishna alongside his consort, Radha, flanked by two female attendants. Krishna is rendered with his traditional blue skin, holding a flute, while Radha is shown in a modest pose, adjusting her veil. The figures stand upon a raised platform, framed by simple curtains that suggest a theatrical setting. The artist, Becharam Das Dutta, employs a clear, linear style that prioritises readability and symbolic clarity over anatomical realism. The use of a limited palette, dominated by primary colours and deep tones, is typical of the period.
Kalighat paintings often blended traditional religious iconography with contemporary social commentary. While this piece focuses on a devotional subject, the stylistic approach reflects the broader shift in Indian art during the colonial era, where traditional techniques adapted to new materials and consumer preferences. The work remains a primary record of the aesthetic values prevalent in urban Bengal during the late nineteenth century. The simplicity of the forms and the directness of the execution provide a clear window into the popular visual culture of the time, capturing a moment of divine interaction through a lens of folk-inspired artistic expression.
