A refined woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicting a woman playing the koto, from the series The Six Arts in Fashionable Guise.
This woodblock print by Chōbunsai Eishi depicts a woman playing the koto, a traditional Japanese stringed instrument. The work belongs to the series The Six Arts in Fashionable Guise, which adapts the classical Confucian concept of the six arts into the contemporary aesthetic of the Edo period. Eishi, a former painter in the service of the Tokugawa shogunate, brought a refined sensibility to the ukiyo-e genre, often favouring elongated figures and a sense of aristocratic grace.
The composition focuses on the musician, who is positioned in a seated posture. Her kimono features subtle patterns, rendered with the precision characteristic of late eighteenth-century printmaking. The background includes a screen decorated with floral motifs, providing a sense of interior space without relying on heavy perspective. A small stand holding a vessel sits to the right, balancing the visual weight of the koto. The colour palette remains restrained, utilising soft earth tones and muted reds that have aged into a harmonious, gentle appearance.
Eishi was known for his depictions of beautiful women, or bijin-ga. Unlike some of his contemporaries who focused on the more theatrical aspects of the pleasure quarters, Eishi often imbued his subjects with a quiet, contemplative quality. The print demonstrates the technical skill of the carvers and printers who worked with him, particularly in the fine lines of the koto strings and the delicate rendering of the hair ornaments. This piece offers a view into the cultural values of the era, where musical accomplishment was considered an essential attribute of a cultured individual. The inclusion of the series title in a cartouche at the top right serves as a formal identifier, typical of the period's print conventions.
