A 1794 woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku, capturing the kabuki actor Koraiya Kinsho with the artist's signature psychological intensity.
This woodblock print by Tōshūsai Sharaku depicts the kabuki actor Koraiya Kinsho. Produced in 1794, the work belongs to a series of actor portraits that defined the artist's brief, ten-month career in the Edo period. Sharaku is known for his departure from the idealised depictions of actors common in the ukiyo-e genre of the time. Instead, he employed a style of caricature that emphasised the specific facial features and psychological intensity of his subjects.
The composition is a close-up, focusing on the actor's head and shoulders. The subject is shown in profile, with his hands tucked into his robes. The lines are precise and calligraphic, defining the contours of the face, the nose, and the traditional hairstyle. The colour palette is restrained, relying on a soft yellow background, muted browns in the checked pattern of the kimono, and subtle green accents. This minimalism directs the viewer's attention to the actor's expression, which conveys a sense of gravity and focus.
Sharaku's work was published by Tsutaya Jūzaburō, a prominent figure in the Edo print industry. The print includes the artist's signature and the publisher's seal, which are standard elements for authenticating works from this period. The use of a mica background, or 'kira-e', was a technique often used to create a shimmering effect, though the appearance of such backgrounds can vary depending on the preservation of the individual print. This portrait serves as a record of the theatrical culture of late 18th-century Japan, capturing the persona of a performer during a specific moment in the kabuki tradition. The print remains a subject of study for its departure from the conventions of the era, offering a direct and unvarnished view of the kabuki stage.
