A detailed etching by Dutch Golden Age artist Jacob Duck, depicting a king in a posture of adoration with ornate robes and ceremonial vessels.
This etching by the Dutch artist Jacob Duck depicts a kneeling figure, identified as a king, in a posture of reverence. Duck, primarily known for his genre scenes featuring soldiers and elegant company, here turns his attention to a traditional religious subject. The figure is shown in profile, facing left, with hands raised in a gesture of prayer or supplication.
The king wears a heavily decorated robe, rendered with meticulous attention to the texture of the fabric and the ornate patterns adorning the garment. Beside him, placed on the ground, are two vessels, likely representing the gifts brought to the Christ child. The etching technique allows for a high degree of control over the tonal values, particularly in the deep shadows of the king's cloak and the fine, cross-hatched lines that define the folds of his attire.
Duck's approach to the figure is grounded in the realism characteristic of the seventeenth-century Dutch school. The facial features are rendered with individualised detail, avoiding the idealised forms often found in Italian Renaissance depictions of the Magi. The composition is compact, focusing entirely on the interaction between the kneeling figure and the objects before him. The background remains largely unworked, which draws the viewer's eye to the weight and volume of the king's form. This print offers a clear example of the technical proficiency of Dutch printmakers during this period, demonstrating a command of line and shadow to create a sense of physical presence within a small format.
